This year the Randolph Church Benevolence Concert welcomes Hentus van Rooyen in his second concert in New Hampshire. A few years ago, as he was finishing his Doctorate at the University of North Texas, he offered a delightful romp through the music of his dissertation, The Keyboard Toccatas of Michelangelo Rossi, to an enthusiastic audience at St. Barnabas in Berlin. Since completing his degree, he held the position of Assistant Professor at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, while serving Christ Episcopal Cathedral in Salina as Director of Music and Organist.
Fortune has brought him back to the Northeast, as he is now Director of Music at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Hentus van Rooyen is a native of South Africa, now teaching at Bowdoin College and the University of Southern Maine. Serving the faculty of the Young Organists Collaborative, Hentus was also chorus master for the Portland Symphony’s Christmas program last year, and in April, 2024, directed the St. Mary Schola, Maine’s Premier Early Music Ensemble. Dr. Van Rooyen holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in organ performance from the University of North Texas in addition to degrees from the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa. He has performed in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and participated in the 12th Mikael Tariverdiev International Organ Competition in Kaliningrad, Russia.
Needless to say, we are excited to welcome him back to New Hampshire!
